The title of my blog post isn’t big, it isn’t clever. It isn’t inventive. This is a blog post about running. Uphill.
Nearly two years ago, I ran a half marathon quite quickly by my standards, I finished in 1:51. By a few months after that, I’d done two Olympic distance triathlons and an obstacle run called Total Warrior. Since then, I have undertaken the following ten-step exercise and fitness routine:
- Get fat
- Get pregnant
- Get fatter
- Have a baby
- Start running again
- Lose baby weight
- Stop running
- Get fat again
- Start running
- Continue running, remaining fat
I am now on step 10. It’s going well. I’ve been running for about 3 weeks on and off and eaten and drank sufficient rubbish to remain fat.
A few days ago, I ran 8.7 miles in 1:33. This is exceptionally slow, possibly even some sort of a record. So, here’s the question. How much difference does it make if you run a decent proportion of the run uphill? I would say the first mile was up quite a steep hill. From then on, it was, to say the least, undulating.
I know it’s good to train uphill, but how much has it slowed me down? If I ran a half marathon at the same pace, I would finish in 2:20. That is ridiculous. Despite my very precise exercise routine, I was hoping to finish my half marathon under two hours. Sadly, the half marathon is in June. This June.
So, give it to me straight. Do I need to lower my expectations? Maybe aim for 2:15? Or can I assume that another month of training and a flat course will make everything ok?
